General Information:

  • Total Carat Weight: Professionally estimated by formula to be approximately 0.80 ct
  • Precious Metal Weight: Approximately ~1.22 dwt or so
  • Precious Metal Material: 18k rose gold with 14-16k gold bail and silver mounting
  • Dimensions: 30.18 mm north to south including the bail (long) x 10.37 east to west (wide) x ~5.50 deep
  • Weight: 1.89 grams
  • Markings: As typical for jewels of this era, it is unmarked, but tests for 18k gold to rose gold with patinaed silver mounting (starburst shape), and a 14-16k gold bail
  • Era: Estimated to date between 1800 and 1834, denoting a professional assessment of late Georgian in origin. It could be that this piece dates to the earliest years of the Victorian era, though without knowing an exact provenance, we cannot ascertain a more precise date range beyond what our years of collecting, dealing, learning and refining our expertise enables us to determine.
  • Buyer Notes: This pendant does NOT come with a chain necklace, but please note that the top bail fits a chain up to ~1.75 mm in thickness. The silver has been left unbuffed as is most prized by collectors. This rarity is a marvel of the late Georgian era, a desirable collector’s item today with an immeasurable story behind it. Please bear in mind that calculating the cost of 19th century pre-set rose cut diamonds is not exact and can vary; the diamond is, indeed, sizable for its age and kind, but still quite delicate. More effective than relying on a carat weight description, to ascertain the diamond’s precise size, please reference the dimensions and photos provided.
    • Prospective buyers, please be aware that the age, composition and materiality of this piece renders it much more fragile than a modern-made diamond solitaire necklace. As such, it should not get wet, and care and caution ought to be taken while being worn and enjoyed. It is a historic relic over 200 years old, and should be preserved such, being that it is a one-off rarity.

    Specifications:

    • Center Stone Type: Diamond
    • Center Stone Count: One (1)
    • Center Stone Dimensions: 6.2 mm x 5.25 mm x 2.85 mm (approximate estimations, and measured within mounting to preserve the pendant’s integrity)
    • Center Stone Shape: Modified oval half Dutch rose cut (rose cut)
    • Center Stone Color: Foiling makes exact color determination impossible, but estimated to be warmer in hue, likely somewhere between J-M (foiling gives this diamond a deep, earthy cognac color)
    • Center Stone Clarity: No visible inclusions to the eye or under a loupe, though the presence of foiling makes this difficult to certify

    The Story:

A truly stunning relic of the earliest decades of the 19th century, this antique pendant began life as a delicate lace pin. Though designed to fasten to a cotton, silk or lace fichu worn around the neck and bust, this piece has since been converted into a very wearable pendant. In its original state, this jewel was designed to recall the idealized silhouette of Halley’s Comet. The story of Halley’s Comet jewelry is legendary in the world of jewelry collecting:

In the earliest years of the 18th century, English astronomer Edmond Halley speculated that the two dozen comets that had swept past the earth between 1337-1698 were actually a single comet, one that he predicted would make its next visible journey in 1758. Although the astronomer did not live to see it, his prediction was correct. Halley’s Comet was then proven to make an appearance every 75 years, and thus, the world awaited for the next date on which it would light up the sky: the year 1835. Foremost, the decorative and wearable arts industries were keen to celebrate this incredible discovery with the production of handcrafted miniature jewels designed to mirror the dynamism of the comet’s streak and sparkle like its blaze. While rarer and rarer today, this is one such jewel.

On the pendant’s face, an expertly faceted rose cut diamond takes center stage, weighing in somewhere between 0.80 ct and 0.84 ct by formula. It may be described as something of a modified oval half Dutch rose cut faceting matrix. Though its size sounds impressive, because the stone is set within a crimped collet mounting, the entire surface of this stone is not visible: ample bezeling is constructed beyond the diamond’s girdle and up the diamond’s sides to protect it. This setting style was extremely standard for jewelry crafted during the 1700s and into the 1800s, including the use of closed back and foiled settings.

Both the use of rose cuts and the employment of foiling were techniques designed specifically to catch the twinkle of candlelight, the foiling itself catching the light and reflecting within the stone. Historically, jewelry smiths would slip thin sheets of tinted or silvery copper "foil", sometimes vibrantly colored, between the gemstone back and its setting. This produced an interesting optical effect that caused gems (even rougher, darker or less skillfully cut stones) to utterly dazzle; the foil works to amp up the refractivity and bouncing of light, while adding light chromatic tonality. Although this foiling practice is an especially alluring attribute for collectors, foiled jewels are quite vulnerable to water damage if even slightly wet. Water causes foil to discolor and darken, to somewhat dissolve, and it can get trapped between the stone and the setting.

A note about foiled jewelry: One must keep in mind that the original owner of this piece did not occupy a lifestyle like we do today: she was not performing the same household tasks, taking part in the same social engagements and duties, pursuing the same athletic endeavors, adhering to the same hygienic practices, etc., that we do now. This being the case, this foiled diamond jewel was simply never intended or designed to withstand today's living. It is worth minding this truth when considering a purchase.

Radiating from the setting is a 20-point articulation of blazing rays, while a geometric patinaed rose gold tail trails the piece as a dropped pendant. It showcases its brooch origins to its reverse, where the rear fastener is still present. This piece is the ultimate beguiling beauty, with echoes of its immense history reverberating in the moody chroma of the pointed rose cut diamond. A remarkably rare piece with no exact comparables in make, age, composition, design and specifications, this pendant is truly one of a kind and an historic treasure.
